The Passion of Christ
Since so many Christian leaders have come out in favor of viewing the new movie, The Passion, you might expect me to also be in favor of it. I heard one of these leaders mention that he doesn't usually recommend seeing R-rated movies, but he recommends this one. Our latter-day prophets have also told us not to view R-rated movies, and as far as I know, they still haven't made an exception for this one. It seems to me that if we read the scriptures, they are sufficiently explicit to understand what God had done for us, what He suffered for us. We can only fully understand it by the power of the Holy Ghost; viewing a re-enactment, however accurate, cannot make us understand it. To view such violence might only harden our hearts instead of soften them. Some, I am sure will watch it over and over, becoming immune to the impact, allowing the significance of what was done for them seem commonplace. What Jesus Christ suffered will never be truly reproduced again. He bore the pain and suffering for each one of us, everyone who has or will live upon the earth, that we might not suffer those things which we will suffer if we do not repent and turn to Him as our Savior. His suffering was Infinite, and we are not able to bear Infinite suffering.
