Dave's Comments:
The
Thai Café opened near the end of November, 2001. Before that, it was
Mama's Cafe, a Russian breakfast and lunch diner. I started going there
from across the street where I was working.
One of Thai Cafe's dishes, God Bless America (#25), was named
in honor of the September 11th event, which occurred just before Cherry and Sombat started
their business. It wasn't long before I felt that I had new friends in
Sombat and Cherry, who are brother and sister. Later, Oat, their cousin,
replaced Sombat at the Café. He soon became a friend, too.
In
July of 2004, New owners took over from Cherry and Oat, who said they were
returning to Thailand. They are Robert and Amy. They have been following in the
same tradition, with good healthy meals, keeping most of the same recipes. They
are also friendly, so the atmosphere at the Café: remained the same.
In 2005, they had two waitresses helping them,
Juliana and Ivy.
In June 2006, Robert and Amy sold the place. It has been renamed and is now
Chai Thai Cuisine. Joy is now the new CEO, and hopes to become the owner. The
food is still as good as ever, and the people, Joy and her step-father, also
seem to be friendly.

Thai Café
The Thai Café on S.E. Stark
Has lots of food that hits the mark.
And served the way that you'll enjoy.
It tastes so good, so don't be coy.
Come to Thai Café for lunch,
And come again to dine or munch.
For food to go, or stay and dine.
Éat at Thai Café; it's fine.

IVY
Ivy climbs o'er obstacles;
She's lively, and she's strong.
Very soon she'll overpow'r
Whatever comes along.
Yet in her strength, there's beauty,
A living, breathing song.
by David E. Sawyer on October 1, 2005
I submitted the poem the same day to poetry.com and it is to be published in
the anthology, The Best Poems and Poets of 2005.
JULIANA
Joy sings in the morning
Until late at night.
Laughter and pleasure,
In all take delight.
All good will surround you.
No troubles will stay,
As long as your heart doesn't stray from the Way.
by David E. Sawyer on August 2, 2005
Sombat & Cherry
Sombat and Cherry, they have a café
Where the food is the best, and I really must say
That of all of the places in which I have ate
It's the only place I've had the Earth on a plate.
The food is sublime and the service is great.
And if you're in a hurry, you've not long to wait.
For they'll stir it up fast, add the spices to please
And just enough sugar, your taste buds to tease.
The place may be small, but it's got lots of heart,
And it's best if you come in and eat a la carte.
So my friend, if your wondering what you should eat
Then come in for the Thai food on SE Stark Street.

Oat's Birthday
Oat has come another year
Along his life's career
To places strange and dear.
But now, today we celebrate,
And wish you on this date,
No ill to be your fate;
That you will prosper everywhere,
In everything you dare,
Victorious, here and there.
Our hearts are full of joy this time,
Remembering with this rhyme,
All memories sublime.
Today we wish the best for you
In every thing you do.
A Happy Birthday Too!
