Hell -
In the Old Testament, the English word "Hell" is translated from the
Hebrew word "Sheol", and in the New Testament it is translated from one
of three Greek words: "Hades", "Gehenna", or "Tartarus". They do not
have the same meanings, though "Sheol" and "Hades" are linguistic
equivalents in their corresponding languages.
Sheol -
(Hebrew: "the abode of the dead", the "underworld", or "pit")
Sheol is the common destination of both the righteous
and the unrighteous dead, as recounted in Ecclesiastes and Job.
Sheol is sometimes compared to Hades, the gloomy, twilight afterlife
of Greek mythology. The word "hades" was in fact substituted for "sheol"
when the Hebrew scriptures were translated into Greek.
Those in Sheol await the resurrection
either in comfort (in the bosom of Abraham) or in torment.
This is shown in Jesus' story of Lazarus and the Rich Man.

Hades -
(Greek: "the unseen", "the god of the underworld",
or "the abode of the dead")
Hades refers both to the ancient Greek underworld, the abode of Hades,
and to the god of the underworld. Hades in Homer referred just to the
god; the genitive Haidou, was an elision to denote locality:
Eventually, the nominative, too, came to designate the abode
of the dead.
In Christian theology, the term hades refers to the abode of the dead,
a parallel of Sheol that in English is also called Hell, where the dead
await Judgment Day, either at peace or in torment.

Tartarus -
(Greek: deep place, abyss)
In classic mythology,
below Heaven, Earth, and Pontus (the Sea) is Tartarus.
It is a deep, gloomy place, a pit, or an abyss used as a dungeon
of torment and suffering that resides beneath the underworld.
In the Gorgias, Plato (c. 400 BC) wrote that souls were judged
after death and those who received punishment were sent to Tartarus.
(used only once in the New Testament, where it refers to the
place to which the fallen angels were banished.)
