The Birdbath Bird

The birdbath bird sits frozen
Through all the summer heat.
He never moves a muscle
Nor utters one small tweet.
His feathers never flutter
In e'en the strongest gale;
He never looks around
To see if danger's on his tail.
The neighbors' cats don't pause
To stalk him from the grass
But totally ignore him,
Whenever they may pass.
His basin may be empty
And yet he doesn't thirst.
His head held high is poised
As though a song might burst.
The leaves upon his branch
Will never turn or fall.
In winter they're still greenish,
Through ice and snow and all.
I hope that you may too
Be like that metal bird
And bear all of life's troubles
Without a single word.
May you, like him, be stalwart
Whatever comes along;
Against the winds of trouble
May you never not be strong.
And may you always have
His song within your heart,
And from the things that matter
Never be apart.

Walking on Sand
Walking on sand is hard if it's dry,
Makes you work like you're climbing a hill.
Walking on sand if it's wet is Okay
For it's firm, and it's cool, and it's still.
My Dad never liked the sand very much
Because it got into his clothes,
But I enjoy sand wherever I can,
Just to feel it between my own toes.

Leprechaun
There was a leprechaun
In Erin's golden days
Who, tho' he was a bitty man,
Was set in all his ways.
He'd tease the country folk
With promises of gold
But always kept his money hid
And never let them hold.
Til one day while he napped,
A rainbow told his tale
And led a farmer to the spot
Within the secret vale.
He grabbed the little man
And made him swear to mend
His way of teasing all the folk -
And so the story ends.

The Acts of the Apostles
The saints of old, in Peter's day
Were blessed 'bove all the earth.
They feasted on the word of God -
The world knew only dearth.
The faithful spent their days in praise,
The Temple was their home.
They sold their earthly goods for God
To live and speak as one.
The prayer of Jesus as He plead
With Father was fulfilled.
And this brought hatred from the Jews,
Who, unbelieving, killed
The best of all the saints who bore
Their testimony pure:
That God had sent His only Son.
To make His promise sure.
And some, who once were lost in sin,
The word of Christ did change
That God His glory might receive
Though many thought it strange.
The gospel, first to only Jews,
To Gentiles now would go.
And persecution only saw
The gospel's fire grow.

Late Again
I was late again today.
It wasn't my fault.
I always like being early,
But things happen
Beyond anyone's control
That we have to accomodate.
We need flexibility,
Or we'll break.

Worlds
A tiny little thing
May hold a world within.
The star we see above,
So far and faint and thin,
May hold a dozen worlds
Without our knowing it.
Worlds below and worlds above;
How do they ever fit?

Joyful in Sorrow
Joyful in sorrow;
Peaceful in pain;
Love for the hater,
Forgiving again;
Taking the bad,
Creating the good;
As did the Savior
We do what He would.
For He served the Father
In all that He did.
And if we would follow,
We'll do what He did.

Coffee Reverie
The smell of coffee takes me back.
I haven't had coffee for years.
Not that I like it.
I had one cup of coffee
I thought tasted good
And I don't remember the brand.
My Mom always had a pot on
When I was young.
She had a small diner where
She served Boyd's coffee,
For free, if you can believe that.
Little tables with red and white checkered cloths,
Stainless steel napkin holders,
And tall glass sugar dispensers.
An electronic game in the corner
Where you propelled a steel puck
Toward targets at the other end.
In a neighbor's yard behind the diner
I suffered my first broken bones
While rough-housing with another boy.
Mom closed her diner, took me next door,
The grocer's wife splinted my arm with a magazine,
Drove us to the doctor's,
Who put me to sleep with ether
To put a plaster cast on my arm.
